About the Intrepid

The Intrepid – launched in 2007 – is new to the San Diego Sportfishing Fleet. She is a grand 116' ABS class steel-hulled beauty. The Intrepid boasts an unmatched level of luxury and comfort combined with the most advanced electronics and features imaginable.

Captain Kevin Cleary
U.S. Coast Guard 100 Ton/Engineer

Kevin ClearyIn 1977, Kevin graduated from CSUN with a Business Administration/Marketing degree. After spending six unfulfilling years in retail management and the restaurant business he began his sportfishing career in San Diego.

Starting on charter boats in 1983 the El Nino year through 1985 he cooked then became deckhand aboard the Baja Dream and Daiwa Pacific.

In 1987 Kevin received his 100-ton USCG license. He continued to work as 2nd license for the Daiwa Pacific.

He started his 17- year, long range fishing career in 1990 on fly down/fly back trips out of Puerto Varrarta aboard the Qualifier 105 with Captains John Grabowski and John Klein. Then worked from La Paz for 2 years with Captains Jack Webster, Sam Patella, Jeff De Buys, Jesus Companioni and John Klein. Next 3 winters they fished from Cabo San Lucas. His familiarity on trips, from 3 to 20 days in Baja waters extends up to 1,000 miles. Include 4 trips to Clipperton Island and 10 seasons in the waters of Hurricane Bank, Cleofus Bank and the Revillagigedo Islands.  

In 1997 joined the Polaris Supreme with Captains Tommy Rothery, Vic Moore and Drew Henderson. Kevin worked for 10 years as 2 nd Captain, Engineer, Deck Boss and Tackle Master. With his extensive experience and knowledge of fishing techniques, Kevin will assist the novice to veteran fisherman to enhance their catch. His strongest contribution to our crew is customer service, always going out of the way to accommodate our guests.

Javier Quintanar
Executive Chef

Danny NicholsJavier Quintanar has extensive experience as an executive chef that spans decades. Professionally trained in international cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu culinary academy, Javier's experience ranges from co-owning and operating his own restaurant, banquet catering, and Executive Chef positions with impressive resorts and cruise ships -- to kitchen design, menu development, management and purchasing. His career has sent him to places like Hawaii, San Diego, and Hollywood. He has had major roles in establishments such as the Makaha Hawaiian Resort , The San Diego Horton Grand Hotel , and the Missouri based Showboat Branson Belle, to name a mere few. He has received accolades wherever he has traveled.

In 1999 Javier embarked on an adventure. After more than 30 years in land-based endeavors, he dove headfirst into the long-range sportfishing industry. It wasn't long before he was totally hooked on what he considers the perfect combination of his love for the culinary arts and the outdoors. During tenure as Executive Chef aboard the Sportfisher Polaris Supreme -- where a reputation for the menu as well as her catch is notorious -- Javier has always received excellent guest reviews.

Javier takes pride in his special brand of cuisine, which layers textures and flavors in artistically presented dishes. His creativity and culinary imagination have earned him praise from critics and guests alike. It is his goal to provide memorable and delicious gourmet meals, featuring fresh seafood, international flavors, and personal recipes to compliment your stay aboard the Intrepid .

We are proud and excited to have Javier aboard the Intrepid for her inaugural season. We are certain he will provide cuisine that will please and surprise.

Steve Hoffman
"Hoffy"
Manager

Steve began sportfishing in 1980 under Captain Bobby Allen aboard the Bold Contender. For 3 years he learned the duties of a charter boat crewmember.

In 1983 he joined Captain Don Sansome on the long- range boat Qualifier 105. Working side by side, with Captains John Grabowski and Sam Patella they broadened his skills to the complex industry of long-range fishing. Chief engineer Danny Nichols taught him the responsibilities in the engine room and on deck. For 13 years Steve learned all aspects of long- range fishing and also worked as one of the chefs. His versatile knowledge and easy-going personality makes him a valuable asset.

2005 was spent aboard the American Angler with friends and Captains Sam Patella and Brian Kiyohara.

In May 2006, He joined the construction completion team of the Intrepid. His knowledge of passenger requirements, tackle, boat systems and business benefits our operation. Steve attended the shows with Carol this winter. His expertise and terrific personality made it a huge success. Steve will be accommodating passenger's dockside, assisting with boarding, tackle package, sign-in and any other needs of our passengers, to ensure your trip will be a joyful experience.

Carol Wood
General Manager

With nearly 30 years of wide-ranging experience in the sport fishing industry, Carol Wood brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Intrepid Sportfishing team.

Starting in her late teens, Carol got off to a running start in the industry working for Frank LoPreste, the successful owner/captain of long-range boats Searcher and Royal Polaris. As part of LoPreste's team, she worked for two years as an office assistant and buyer prior to her promotion to office manager for San Diego's premier sport fishing operation Fisherman's Landing. Carol's management duties at Fisherman's Landing included chartering boats, reservations, bookkeeping, radio communications, handling fishing permits and boat licenses, and employee training and supervision.

Carol joined Intrepid Sportfishing in 2002 as General Manager and has been instrumental in the planning and promotion of the Intrepid . Her experience and contacts in the industry have played a key role in developing relationships with sponsors, charter groups and trade organizations. Carol's responsibilities for the Intrepid also include customer relations, reservations, website design, promotion, accounts receivable, purchasing, permits, and overseeing communications and crew upon landing.
